| Description: First Presbyterian Church of
DeQueen, Arkansas was officially organized in February 1898. Lumber
placed on the ground in April of that year at 5th and Vandervoort
Streets expressed the resolve of a small band of Presbyterians to build
a church. By July, the congregations celebrated the Sacrament of
the Lord's Supper for the first time in the completed sanctuary --
without windows, which had not arrived from Belgium. In December,
however, the church installed its first pastor, Rev. J. S. Nisbet, and
also dedicated its new building with stained pressed-glass windows
installed.
Community involvement has always been part of this church's witness: the town's first kindergarten in the 1920's; a special program for disabled children and adults in the 1970's; beginning a Salvation Army service unit for Sevier County in the 1980's;and a community food pantry in the 1990's. For over 100 years the church has been sustained by God's grace, and continues to worship, witness and serve to His glory. |
